Home Equals

There is no question that Canada is in the middle of a housing crisis, and BC is no exception. A lack of affordable homes is driving young families out of the province to seek opportunities elsewhere. Habitat for Humanity – BC Caucus strives to find solutions in our province and to do what we can to provide affordable options for families in need.

The BC Caucus proudly represents seven affiliates in British Columbia, all of which are primarily focused on mobilizing volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting homeownership for hard-working families. These seven affiliates are:

  • Victoria

  • Mid-Vancouver Island

  • Vancouver Island North

  • Greater Vancouver

  • Sunshine Coast

  • Okanagan

  • Southeast BC

Despite all the work that has been done to date, recent Statistics Canada data indicates that BC is leading the country as the province with the highest rate of unaffordable homes and ranks as the most unaffordable province for housing in all of Canada.

The Government of BC recognizes the urgent need for more housing, but it cannot accomplish this alone. This important work requires the partnership of municipalities, the federal government, First Nations, non-profit organizations, private landlords, tenants, community members, and home builders.

As a global housing leader with dozens of affiliates in Canada and over 3,000 around the world, Habitat for Humanity has a unique opportunity in ensuring that access to adequate housing is prioritized. But we cannot do it alone. It will take the power of communities coupled with policy change to ensure access to adequate housing for all. Together, we can advance policies that unlock the potential of people who deserve an equal shot at a decent home.

The housing crisis in B.C. will only worsen without the support of everyone in creating sustainable solutions. The Habitat for Humanity – BC Caucus believes we can overcome barriers and impediments to building affordable housing. We are dedicated to the goal of finding these solutions for people seeking to stay and work in British Columbia or make the province their home.
